DENTON – The long, dry summer comes to an end for Mean Green swimming and diving Saturday as they kick off the 2019-20 campaign by hosting Arkansas-Little Rock for a dual meet at the Pohl Recreation Center.
Â
North Texas, who posted a program-best 3rd place finish at the 2019 Conference USA Championships, returns 15 letterwinners with only two of them being seniors. The Mean Green add 12 newcomers to round out the 27 woman roster.
Â
2019 C-USA Co-Coach of the Year Brittany Roth enters her fourth season guiding the Mean Green with assistants Rachel Friel and Mark Murdock returning for years four and five respectively.
Â
"I'm always excited when the racing portion of our season begins," Roth said. "I'm looking forward to seeing our upperclassmen lead by example and for our newest team members to begin writing their legacies here at UNT."
Â
The Mean Green also sent 11 student-athletes to the CSCAA National Invitation Championship in 2019, where they finished 17th out of 48 teams, six of those student-athletes return this season.
Â
A key returner for North Texas is junior team captain Leigh Faires McGee who took home a silver medal in the 200 freestyle and a bronze in the 100 freestyle at the conference championships, and currently holds three school records.
Â
"I'm excited to see how we build off last season," McGee said. "We have a great group of girls with such amazing talents and a great team atmosphere."
Â
North Texas will be looking to build off of the historic 2018-19 season which culminated at the Conference championships in March. The Mean Green brought home medals in eight different events, including a gold medal in the 100-meter Butterfly by alumnus Emmabeth Jensen. Returners combined to bring home five of the eight medals.
Â
Action with Arkansas-Little Rock will get underway at 11 a.m. with the 400-yard medley relay, with diving events beginning at the same time in the Physical Education Building. Fans can keep up with the meet on Twitter (@MeanGreenSwim) and Instagram (@meangreenswimdive).
