DENTON – Anisha George returns to North Texas women's basketball for the 2019-20 season as the team leader in scoring, rebounding and shooting proficiency, and the senior post used this summer to continue that dominance as a member of the Virgin Islands playing in the Pan American Games held in Peru.
George was a force inside during the four contests, as she was last year for the Mean Green, by leading the Games in rebounding (9.8) and field goal percentage (64.7), and was second in scoring (20.8). In a standout performance, the St. Croix native put up 32 points on 12-of-15 shooting along with 14 rebounds against Argentina, the 15th-ranked team in the world.
"I feel like I performed to the best of my ability. Win or lose I gave it my all," George said.
The Virgin Islands entered the Games tied with Columbia as the 34th-ranked team along with number-one United States and unranked Paraguay in their group. This year marked the first competition for the Virgin Islands in the Pan American Games.
"I gained a lot of experience, more toughness, and also learned a few things from my other teammates by playing in the Pan American Games," George said.
George and her team came up just short Aug. 6 against Colombia, 69-66, in their opening contest. Top-ranked USA came away with a 103-55 victory in game two Aug. 7, and the Virgin Islands fell, 73-59, against Argentina despite George's monumental game Aug 8. Playing for seventh place, the Virgin Islands came close in a 79-71 loss to Paraguay Aug. 9.
"It means a lot to me to be able to play and represent the Virgin Islands. I'm proud of where I'm from and grateful for the opportunity to show it," George said.
Brazil shocked the USA to take the title, whilePuerto Rice claimed fourth, Colombia fifth and Argentina sixth.
