Brann, James Named Players Of The Week

DALLAS – After shutting out two of the top offensive teams in the league this weekend, North Texas' keeper Kelsey Brann and defensive centerback Dominique James were named Conference USA Players of the Week.
Brann, who has a league leading seven shutouts this year and was the only keeper to have two shutouts this past week, took home the C-USA Goalkeeper of the Week award.
This is the second week in a row James has been named the league's defensive player of the week. The defending C-USA Player of the Year played every minute of last week's two shutout victories and held Middle Tennessee's two preseason all-conference weapons to zero shots in the Mean Green's 3-0 win on Sunday.
"This was a great week for the team," James said. "We were able to get two wins against a couple of strong teams and pulled out two more shutouts. I'm proud of what we were able to accomplish this weekend and hope to continue our success next weekend against UTSA."
While North Texas' offensive continues to find its rhythm, Brann and James have anchored a defense that has yet to give up a goal in conference play and last week against two teams that average more than two goals per match, Brann and James came up big. After beating Southern Miss on Thursday 1-0 and Middle Tennessee 3-0 on Sunday, the Mean Green sit atop the league standings.
Brann, a 2018 all-conference honoree, is four shutouts shy of tying her mark from last season. Her 11 shutouts a year ago are the second-most in a single-season in program history and the most by a freshman UNT keeper. "The Rock" as she's referred to by head coach John Hedlund has given up just one goal at home this season as the Mean Green improved to 7-0 at the Mean Green Soccer and Track & Field Stadium after Sunday's win.
James, who plays right in front of Brann on the defensive backline and is the last line of defense before Brann, was her usual dominate self. James has become notorious for chasing down attacking players and catching them from behind. She did that a number of times this week and also blocked four shots, two of which came inside the 18-yard box. On Thursday, Southern Miss had a free kick from just roughly 20 yards out. James not only stood on the wall which is 10 yards in front of the shot but she stepped up and blocked the shot without hesitation.
The Mean Green play just one match this coming week as they travel to UT San Antonio on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match.
