DENTON – North Texas head men's basketball coach Grant McCasland has finalized the Mean Green's 2019-20 season non-conference schedule, which features three teams that made the NCAA Tournament a year ago and two who played in the NIT.
Starting Nov. 5 at home versus Oklahoma Christian University, UNT will host seven of its 13 non-conference games including the Big 12's Oklahoma on Dec. 5. The Sooners are coming off a Round of 32 appearance in the 2019 NCAA Tournament.
Along with the Sooners and OCU, the Mean Green will welcome Eastern Michigan (Nov. 16), North Carolina A&T (Nov. 19), Little Rock (Dec.7), Arkansas Pine Bluff (Dec. 21) and Texas Wesleyan (Dec. 28) to the Super Pit before starting Conference USA play during the first week of January.
After going 12-1 during its non-conference slate a year ago, North Texas will continue to challenge itself with a number of tough non-conference road games this coming season. The Mean Green will play at VCU (Nov. 8), Arkansas (Nov. 12) and Dayton (Dec. 17).
The VCU Rams made the NCAA Tournament last season while Arkansas and Dayton both played in the NIT.
On Dec. 2 UNT travels to Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex rival UT Arlington. The Mean Green beat the Mustangs 63-61 in a thriller last season in Denton. It will be the 58th all-time meeting between the two schools. North Texas has gotten the better of UTA 31 times.
From Nov. 22-24, North Texas will travel to Jamaica to play in the 2019 Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic. In the eight-team event, the Mean Green will face Rhode Island and Utah State.
Rhode Island is just two years removed from reaching the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament and Utah State is coming off a 28-win season and is the defending Mountain West champ and earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
The Mean Green are entering their third season under head coach Grant McCasland who has led the program to back-to-back 20-win seasons in his first two years in Denton while also setting many program records. The Mean Green's 16-1 start to the 2018-19 season was the best start in program history.
