Mean Green Start SMU Metroplex

DALLAS — The North Texas tennis team will compete in the SMU Invite Metroplex Mania this weekend for its final prep before the start of the spring the season.
Along with UNT and SMU, Wake Forest, Denver, and Wisconsin will compete in this year's Metroplex Mania. Wake Forest finished the 2019 season with a ranking of 23, while Wisconsin ended at 39 and Denver at 45.
"This tournament gives us a great opportunity to get back into match play and get our rust off," said head coach Sujay Lama. "It's been a long wait so we are just excited to get things rolling and prepare for the dual matches."

UNT features five newcomers — four freshmen and one transfer from Kansas State.
14th SEASON
The Mean Green are under the direction of head coach Sujay Lama is in his 14th season as North Texas' coach.
EIGHT OF THE LAST 10
The Mean Green have reached the conference tournament semifinal round eight of the last 10 years. Last season, they beat UAB and FIU as they once again reached the C-USA semifinal round before falling to Old Dominion.
SENIOR SEASON
North Texas' lone senior is Alexandra Heczey who was named second team all-conference last year. It was her first all-conference honor this season.
TEXAS REGIONAL RECAP
In October, the Mean Green didn't repeat as Texas Regional double champions, however, despite being one of the youngest teams in the most competitive regional in the nation, North Texas finished the tournament with 10 singles wins and Nidhi Surapaneni and freshman Kexuan Zhou each reached the quarterfinals of the singles consolation bracket. After losing in the first round of the singles draw, Surapaneni and Zhou bounced back to win three straight matches each in the consolation bracket and reach the quarterfinal round. The resilience they showed to lead a youthful team excites the coaches for the future of this year.

UNT hosts Stephen F. Austin on Jan. 17 to begin the dual match spring season.
