Mean Green Start Strong At Big 12 Series
10/12/2020 12:38:00 AM | Women's Tennis
Norman, Oklahoma —The North Texas tennis team concluded the two-day Big 12 series round robin tournament late Sunday afternoon. The Mean Green had a fantastic first day where they picked up three singles wins and a doubles victory over some of the top competition in the southwest.
Sunday was a little more difficult for UNT but head coach Sujay Lama found plenty to be positive about.
"This was a great opportunity for learning for our team," Lama said. "Results wise we are a bit disappointed we didn't capitalize on several opportunities but at the same time we experienced growth with each match."
On Sunday in singles, junior Lucie Devier had four match points against her Arkansas opponent and was up 9-6 in the third set tie break. However, the Mean Green newcomer fell 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (9).
Senior Nidhi Surapaneni also was impressive for the Mean Green and received praise from her coaches for her strong performance despite falling 6-3, 7-5. Surapaneni was unbeaten on Saturday. She beat an Arkansas opponent in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 in singles and then teamed up with sophomore Louisa Junghanns in doubles to comfortably win also against a Razorback opponent.
Over the two days the Mean Green faced mostly Arkansas opponents but got a couple matches in against Texas Tech and Oklahoma foes. Freshman Saki Oyama continued her strong first season with the Mean Green with a ferocious 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (6) singles victory over a Texas Tech opponent on Saturday.
"The beauty of playing good teams and tough competition is it gives you the motivation to work harder to reach a higher level," Lama said. "This team is fully committed to doing just that."
Stay tuned for more updates to the UNT tennis fall schedule as the year progresses.
