DENTON — North Texas men's basketball redshirt senior Jahmiah Simmons will miss the remainder of the season after sustaining an Achilles tendon injury during practice earlier this month.
Simmons underwent surgery and he is recovering well.
"We are heartbroken for Jahmiah," said head coach Grant McCasland. "He's been with our program from the very beginning and embodies everything that has helped make this team so great. He is loved by everyone in this program and we will miss him on the court but he'll still make a big impact, because of his leadership. We are here for him in every step of his recovery."
Simmons began his college career in 2016 as a freshman at Arkansas State where McCasland was the head coach. In 2017 when McCasland took over the Mean Green program Simmons came with him.
Since redshirting in 2017-18 due to NCAA transfer rules, Simmons has become a steady and consistent figure for the Mean Green who won the Conference USA regular season championship last season.
Over the last two years he's played in 57 games for UNT and made nine starts. Entering this year he has the third-most active career rebounds for North Texas with 153. His 57 career games played for the Mean Green are the second-most behind senior Zachary Simmons' 101.
In 2018-19, Simmons helped guide UNT to its best start in program-history with a 16-1 record. During the 2018 Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic championship game against Hawaii, Simmons scored a team-high 13 points to lead his team to the 68-51 victory.
The 6-foot-4 forward was born and raised in the U.S. Virgin Islands and has played on the USVI's national basketball team. With UNT Simmons has averaged 2.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.
