The North Texas men's golf team plays its lone tournament of the fall schedule when it hosts an absolutely loaded field at the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational at its home course in Carrollton.
THE EVENT: The Maridoe Golf Club will play at 7,521 yards, and will be a par-72 course for the tournament. The three-day event begins Sunday and concludes on Tuesday. There will be tee times beginning at 7:50 a.m., running through 1:10 p.m., on all three days of competition with all players teeing off from Hole 1.
THE FIELD: There are 12 teams participating in the tournament (GolfStat rankings are based on last season's final rankings): No. 10 Baylor, Coastal Carolina, No. 26 East Tennessee State, Iowa State, No. 38 Kansas, North Texas, No. 2 Oklahoma, No. 27 Oklahoma State, No. 1 Pepperdine, TCU, No. 4 Texas and No. 3 Texas Tech.
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Vicente Marzilio, Sean Wilcox, Viktor Forslund, Lenny Bergsson and Diego Prone. Marzilio and Prone are making their collegiate debuts, and Wilcox will be making his Mean Green debuting after spending three years at Tennessee.
RESULTS: Live results will be posted on GolfStat.com. Full recaps from each day of competition will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of each round. Spectators, other than players' families, will not be allowed to attend due to COVID-19 precautions.
LAST TIME OUT: North Texas finished tied for seventh at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in late February before the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the remainder of the season in early March. In that tournament, Viktor Forslund had his best showing of the year when he tied for ninth at 4-under par.
INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR: The Mean Green feature seven international players this year, including some key freshmen who are expected to contribute immediately. Lenny Bergsson (Iceland), Viktor Forslund (Sweden), Cameron Harlock (New Zealand), Zak Karkaletsos (Spain), Diego Prone (Argentina), Vicente Marzilio (Argentina) and Hiroki Miya (New Zealand) round out the international players. Harlock and Miya have both opted out for the fall and remained in New Zealand.
STRACKE SAYS: "We have an opportunity to play against the best field of the fall season. Maridoe Golf Club is in great shape and will create a challenge for every player in the field. The team that can overcome adversity the best will have the best chance to win."
UP NEXT: North Texas will kick off the spring schedule with a trip to Houston for the All-American Intercollegiate on Feb. 15-16.
HOME SWEET MARIDOE: North Texas enjoys its home course -- the Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton. The course opened to members in July 2017 and gives the Mean Green a state-of-the-art home course with world-class facilities, including a fully-dedicated practice facility, complete with a two-ended driving range to account for many varying wind conditions, a sprawling three-acre short game retreat and indoor facilities with state-of-the-art hitting bays that provide tools the program had not previously had at its disposal.
