DENTON – This season's nonconference schedule for North Texas women's basketball has been finalized by head coach Jalie Mitchell and features contests against Texas, Oklahoma State and a trip to the South Padre Island Classic.
"Thrilled is an understatement," Mitchell said. "With all of the uncertainty surrounding our playing season in the last few months, it is outstanding to finally have a start date and a schedule in place to depend on. I am excited for our program, and for our young women."
The Mean Green begin the 2020-21 slate at home against Texas A&M-Texarkana Nov. 25. Last season, UNT dominated the first-year NAIA program, 114-54. The 114 points scored against the Eagles were the highest total recorded by a Conference USA team and 13th most points scored in Division I, and the 46 field goals were fifth best in DI and the 63 rebounds were 11th.
North Texas travels to Austin to take on the Longhorns Nov. 29 for the third matchup in as many seasons. The Mean Green lost to Texas last year at the Rainbow Wahine Showdown in a 63-57 contest and nearly upset the No. 11/8 Longhorns in 2017-18, losing 64-54.
UNT heads to take on Louisiana Dec. 4 for the 36th meeting between the squads. Last season, the Mean Green hung on for a 69-66 win to lead the all-time series 19-17.
UTRGV hosts the South Padre Island Classic Dec. 18-19 featuring the Vipers, North Texas, Weber State and Prairie View A&M where the Mean Green will face WSU and PVAMU. North Texas is 1-2 against Weber State and 2-0 versus Prairie View A&M all-time.
The nonconference schedule concludes with a home contest against Oklahoma State Dec. 22. The Mean Green will look to improve upon their 1-12 record against the Cowgirls.
"I believe we have a healthy mixture of home, road and neutral court games that will help prepare us for conference play. We still need the Pit rocking! Mean Green family, please make sure our student-athletes continue to feel your love and support. There is nothing like it!" Mitchell said.
