DALLAS - Vicente Marzilio has had quite the week.
The UNT freshman made his collegiate golf debut at the loaded Maridoe Collegiate Invitational earlier this week and was one of just five golfers to shoot under par in the opening round on Sunday before finishing on Tuesday in a tie for 17th place to lead the way for UNT's sixth-place finish in a field that featured the nation's top four teams from last season and several other highly ranked opponents. Also in the field were 34 of the nation's top 100 players, according to Golfweek's rankings. On Thursday, he was named the Conference USA men's Golfer of the Week, the league announced.
Marzilio finished the three-day event with a 71-75-77-223 to finish at 7-over par. The winner of the tournament was 1-under par and no other golfer in the field broke par on one of the country's toughest courses.
"Vicente had an amazing week playing in his first college event at one of the most difficult venues," UNT head coach Brad Stracke said. "I'm so proud of how Vicente conducts himself on and off the course."
Marzilio is the first Mean Green golfer to earn the conference's weekly honor since Jordan Sanders on March 20, 2019.
