Tennis Attacks Regional Tournament

FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas — The North Texas women's tennis team concluded this year's Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional tournament with its strongest overall performance of the fall.
The Mean Green left the three-day tournament in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with 12 wins — .545 winning percentage — and senior Nidhi Surapaneni led the charge. Surapaneni reached the round of 32 in the singles draw and round of 16 in the doubles draw with partner Saki Oyama. In both draws Surapaneni lost to the No. 1 overall seed.
UNT finished the tournament with a perfect Sunday as they went 3-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles against the Southland Conference defending champs, Central Arkansas.
"We accomplished our goal of playing our best tennis of the fall season at regionals. The competition we faced this weekend and at the two previous tournaments have really helped us raise our level," said head coach Sujay Lama. "With each match we were able to improve and get better."
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mean Green's normal ITA Regional in Texas was canceled. However, due to their recent success they were invited to this weekend's central regional tournament, which was the only women's regional in the nation. They played against opponents such as Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, TCU, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Central Arkansas to name a few.
"I saw individual growth in each of us during this tournament," Surapaneni said. "The competition was much tougher than what we are usually used to but playing the past two tournaments has helped us gain some momentum to play this regional. We finished off with a winning record in both singles and doubles and at the end of the day what matters is the wins. Each of us now has a clearer picture of what we need to work on. It makes the next few weeks of the fall semester practice very exciting."
Along with the perfect Sunday against the defending Southland champs, another highlight was the performance of newcomers Lucie Devier and Saki Oyama who reached the quarterfinals for singles in the consolation bracket. Freshman Matilde Magrini missed the quarterfinals narrowly. She fell 11-9 in the third set of her round of 16 match.
"The key is to get back to work and attack the areas we need to improve physically, technically, tactically and most importantly mentally," Lama said. "We have to develop a killer instinct so we can close out games, sets and matches. If we do that we will set ourselves up for success in the spring season."
