BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The first championship for Conference USA and North Texas since the coronavirus pandemic began last spring will take place when C-USA's cross country teams will compete as UAB hosts the men's and women's races at Veterans Park in Birmingham, Ala., Saturday.
The women's 6K will begin at 9 a.m. followed by the men's 8K at 10. Thirteen teams will contend on the women's side and 11 for the men. Charlotte, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Rice, UTEP, UTSA and WKU each have a men's and women's team, while Southern Miss and UAB have women's teams only.
"We are very excited to have the opportunity to go race at a conference championship, and I applaud the team for staying healthy and isolated this fall," head coach Kevin Williams said.
The men finished sixth and the women seventh at the 2019 Conference USA Championships. The men are a season removed from earning the 2018 C-USA men's title where returners Jack Beaumont ran to all-conference first team honors and Alec Esposito landed a spot on the third team.
"The men are confident. It's been the most consistent training group I have had. Health was our Achilles heel last year, and luckily we have stayed injury free this fall," Williams said.
"The women's race is going to be extremely close. We will be successful if we are aggressive."
Results, photo galleries and award winners will be posted on the C-USA Cross Country Championship Central home page following the races. Fans can also follow along for updates and more on Twitter @ConferenceUSA using the hashtags #CUSAXC and #TheCUSAWay.
