Mean Green Shine In TCU Invite

FT. Worth —The North Texas tennis team began the 2020-21 year with eight victories at the highly competitive TCU invite this weekend.
The Mean Green picked up wins in the three-day invite over opponents such as Arkansas, Texas and Baylor. The Longhorns finished last season ranked No. 4 in the nation and the Bears were ranked No. 22.
Seven of the eight Mean Green players all picked up at least one victory this weekend.
"Everyone was excited to compete this weekend after a long layoff," said senior Nidhi Surapaneni. "This also helped the whole team understand what we need to work on during practice. I feel like we have a very solid team this year where everyone can compete at a high level."
The three-day invite, which began on Friday was the first competition UNT had played in since the COVID-19 pandemic postponed all athletic activities across the country. Exactly 207 days since the Mean Green's last match and they seemed deeper and stronger despite the long layoff.
Along with veterans like Surapaneni carrying the torch, UNT brought to life at the TCU invite its three newcomers who all had some of the best showings at this weekend's competition.
Freshman Saki Oyama was part of four of the Mean Green's 10 victories this weekend. Oyama won two singles matches over Texas opponents and she and her doubles partner sophomore Sophia Hummel beat an Arkansas and a Baylor opponents in doubles.
Junior college transfer Lucie Devier, who last season was the nation's No. 2 ranked NJCAA singles and doubles player at Tyler JC, picked up two big singles wins — both over Texas opponents — and her and fellow newcomer Matilde Magrini won a doubles match on Friday over a mixed pair.
Returning sophomores Kexuan Zhou and Louisa Junghanns left a big impression on everyone as they pulled together to win three doubles matches over the three-day tournament. Two of their doubles victories came against Baylor opponents and one came against an Arkansas doubles team.
Zhou and Junghanns are two of five returners for the Mean Green who began last season with the best start to a spring season in program history before the pandemic struck and abruptly ended their year.
"This was such a productive weekend to play this caliber of competition," said UNT head coach Sujay Lama. "It was great to see the ladies battling and competing at a high level. We were able to improve with each match and come home inspired and motivated to work even harder."
