MORGANTOWN, W. VA. — In less than 48 hours the North Texas men's basketball team went from looking for an opponent to play to scheduling a game at No. 11 West Virginia, hopping on a jet to the Mountain State and playing the nationally ranked Mountaineers.
The Mean Green will face No. 11 WVU at 2 p.m. CT on Friday from the WVU Coliseum. The game will be streamed on BIG 12 Now on ESPN+ and on the radio on the Mean Green Sports Network.
This will be the first all-time meeting between the two programs.
UNT will be aiming to beat its first AP Top 25 opponent since 1971 when they knocked off No. 15 Louisville on the road, 79-73. They came close last year when they lost by three points at No. 25 VCU, 59-56. Later in the year they played No. 15 Utah State and led with just four minutes remaining but couldn't hold on.
- Head Coach Grant McCasland was an assistant at Baylor from 2011-16. During those five seasons they went 6-3 versus West Virginia.
- Under fourth-year head coach Grant McCasland, the Mean Green have played three AP Top 25 teams. All three were last season (at No. 25 VCU, vs. 15 Utah St. and at No. 13 Dayton). They lost all three by an average score of 8.3 points. Its 3-point loss at No. 25 VCU was the closest of the three. Against Utah State, the Mean Green led with four minutes remaining. At VCU, the Mean Green were down by one point with 42 seconds remaining.
- Friday will be a home-opener for WVU. They are 101-10 all-time in home-openers.
