Second Half Propels Mean Green To Victory

DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team outscored Arkansas Pine Bluff 45-24 in the second-half to sail to a 81-56 victory Tuesday night at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green (2-3) have now won 13 of their last 14 at home dating back to last year. This is the third year in a row they've beaten UAPB (1-7) at the Super Pit.
"Give (Arkasnas Pine Bluff) credit, because they came out with energy and made shots," said head coach Grant McCasland. "Today we showed off our depth. The ability to throw different lineups out there and keep the energy on the floor defensively. That made a huge difference.
After allowing UAPB to shoot nearly 45 percent from the field in the first half and go 4-of-9 from 3-point range and enter halftime down just four points, the Mean Green smothered the Golden Lions in the second half. UNT held Arkansas Pine Bluff without a field goal for a five-minute stretch and then shortly after a four-minute stretch in the second half. Meanwhile, the Mean Green went on a double-digit scoring run.
UAPB was just 9-of-26 in the second half.
On Tuesday, UNT was led by Javion Hamlet's 14 points to go along with his three assists. Early in the first half Hamlet scored his 500th career point.
Senior Zachary Simmons had 12 points, 10 of which came in the second half on 4-of-6 shooting. Terence Lewis II also had a huge second-half. Nine of his 11 points came in the second frame.
Rubin Jones and James Reese added 10 points each of their own to go along with the other double-digit scorers.
With the win, McCasland moves into the sixth-place on the program's all-time wins list with 63. The fourth-year Mean Green head coach is 63-44 all-time with UNT. He's now 41-13 at home.
North Texas has a quick turnaround as they'll face Houston Baptist on Thursday at 7 p.m. at The Super Pit. Thursday's game will be streamed on YouTube Live and the Mean Green Sports Network Learfield IMG College.
