DENTON — The eight-time Conference USA champion North Texas soccer team and its head coach John Hedlund have announced the hiring of assistant coaches Brian Periman and Dylan Burnett. Along with their hiring, current Mean Green assistant and alum Fleur Benatar has been promoted to associated head coach.
Periman comes to UNT from New Mexico State. He also serves as a national scout for the United States Soccer Federation alongside Benatar.
Burnett was previously the head coach at Mississippi University for Women and led the Owls to their first USCAA Soccer Championship Tournament where they were a six-seed and finished with the best record in program history. He will serve as a volunteer assistant coach.
"I would like to welcome Brian and Dylan to the Mean Green family," Hedlund said. "I've been very fortunate to work with outstanding coaches throughout my career. My new staff will be thrown into the fire right away with a very challenging home and road schedule this coming season. But I love the challenge of playing several nationally ranked teams and these are great games for our fans."
Brian Periman
Periman has been a US youth national team identification scout from September 2019 to the present. Along with that he most recently served as an assistant coach at New Mexico State. While at NMSU he worked with the goalkeepers and helped to improve the goals-against average form 2.51 in 2018 to a goal against average of 1.93 in 2019. Along with working the NMSU goalkeepers, Periman was responsible for the game analysis and scout of the opponents as well and working with the back line and free kicks.
UNT features goalkeeper Kelsey Brann who in 2019 as a redshirt sophomore was named 2019 Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Year and finished the regular season with 12 shutouts, which was tied for the second-most in the country. She led C-USA in shutouts, save percentage, wins and goals-against average.
Prior to his time in Las Cruces, New Mexico, the Tucson, Arizona native spent the 2018 and 2019 season on staff at FIU and the season of 2014 – 2017 at East Carolina. He has also served on the Region III goalkeeping staff from 2015 to present.
The Menlo College graduate served on staff at High Point (2013), Arizona (2010 and 2012) and Florida Atlantic (2011). Before making the switch to college athletics, Periman spent the 2010 season with the Arizona Rush of the Women's Professional Soccer League. In his lone season in Tucson, he helped guide the Rush to the U23 National Championship. After playing for Menlo, Periman played professionally, spending three seasons with the San Jose Frogs of the United Soccer League (2008-10) and one season with F.C. Tucson (2011). Periman holds a bachelor's degree in Business Management from Menlo.
Periman will finish his USSF B license in spring of 2020 and hold a USSF C and D along with the NSCAA Goalkeeping level III diploma.
Dylan Burnett
Burnett comes to North Texas with Conference USA coaching experience. The 2014 Lincoln Memorial University grad coached the 2017 and 2018 season as an assistant coach with Southern Miss. While with the Golden Eagles, he helped lead USM to the C-USA Tournament finals in 2018 where they eventually lost to North Texas in overtime. He was responsible for helping recruit some of the most talented Dallas/ Fort Worth players to Hattiesburg. It was the first time in program history USM had reached the finals of a conference tournament.
The Golden Eagles saw three all-conference selections, three all-conference tournament selections, and two all-south region selections for their 2018 effort.
Before joining the Golden Eagles staff, Burnett served as the Director of Coaching at the Arlington Futbol Club in Arlington, Tennessee, for more than one year. During his time in Tennessee, the club was ranked at No. 7 in the state and the U-18 team was the 2017 CSA Adidas Blues City Blowout Champions. Burnett taught individual lessons including skills, games tactics, and leadership strategies.
As the director, Burnett focused on creating a productive and positive environment for student-athletes while also scheduling game, practice and tournament schedules.
Burnett served as the Boys and Girls Head Soccer Coach at Munford High School in Tennessee from 2015-17 prior to his AFC position. In those two years, his teams earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award, which was one of 48 schools and one of three Tennessee schools to earn the award for both boys and girls. Burnett's coaching efforts were awarded when he coached the first player in district history to the Division 1 All-State team. His players were also recognized as Max Preps TN Players of the Week and Memphis Area Division award honorees while he was named District Coach of the Year two seasons in a row.
His off-field efforts also produced more than $10,000 in fundraising efforts and successfully negotiated the construction of a new soccer facility.
Burnett's athletic talents showed on the field as well when we played for the Mississippi State football team as a kicker in 2010. After a torn hip flexor, Burnett was sidelined but transferred to Lincoln Memorial to play soccer at the Division II level. While at LMU, the Railsplitters competed in the South Atlantic Conference playoffs, including the semifinals in 2011 and 2013. The squad made it to the conference championship in 2012 and posted a top-6 regional ranking.
Burnett graduated in 2014 from LMU with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Kinesiology with minors in health and strength and conditioning. Burnett also holds his Tennessee Practitioner Teaching license, a NSCAA National Diploma, USSF E License, NSCAA Level 1 Diploma, NSCAA Goalkeeping 2 diploma, a NSCAA Futsal Level 1 diploma, and an Advanced National Diploma. He will complete a Master's of Science in Sports Coaching Education at the end of July from Southern Miss.
Prior to coming to Denton, Burnett served one season as the head men's soccer coach at Mississippi University for Women.
