DENTON – The six-time defending and eight-time overall Conference USA champion North Texas soccer team had four incoming freshmen earn Texas Association of Soccer Coaches honors. Three of the four honorees were named all-state.
Haley Roberson (Coppell), Madi Starrett (Plano) and Devyn Flannery (Plano) were named TASCO All-State and Sydnie Myers (Round Rock, Texas) was named TASCO All-Region.
On April 17 the state of Texas closed all in-person classes due to COVID-19 and thus forcing the University Interscholastic League Texas Girls Soccer season to be cut short. However, TASCO went forward with its annual all-region and all-state voting by its coaches.
UNT finished this past season, its 25th overall, by reaching the NCAA Tournament for a seventh time in program history and claiming its 16th overall conference title. The Mean Green finished with a 15-6-1 record on the year. They still have never had a losing season and haven't lost a home conference game since 2008.
During its current run of six straight C-USA championships, the Mean Green have been one of the most dominate defensive teams in the nation. However North Texas lost five starters after the 2019 season to graduation, including four defensive starters — All-American Dominique James, three-time team captain and all-conference honoree Natalie Newell, all-conference honoree Brittnye Lawson and all-tournament honoree Madeline Guderian.
Two of the 2020 TASCO All-State honorees, Roberson and Starrett, are expected to compete for starting positions on the UNT backline this coming season.
Roberson was named TASCO 6A First Team All-Region last year and led her Cowgirls to round three of the playoffs. The two-time captain and a district defensive MVP at Coppell, Roberson led the Cowgirls to a district championship last year after going undefeated in district play and a 24-1-1 overall record. Roberson, a defender, and her Cowgirls were 14-3-2 this year before the season was cut short. She was a member of a Coppell defense that in 2017 shutout its first 13 opponents and 16 of its first 17. She played club for Sting Soccer Club.
Starrett ranked in the top 25 in the Dallas Fort Worth area for assists at any division this season before the year was cut short. Starrett was high school teammates with Flannery at Frisco's Lebanon Trails High School. She played her club soccer for Sting Soccer Club.
Before the season was cut short, Frisco Lebanon Trails High School 2020 graduate Devyn Flannery led her Blazers to a top 10 TASCO Preseason Region 2 5A girls soccer ranking and a top 10 ranking by the Dallas Morning News. The right-footed forward was one of the top goal scorers in the Dallas Fort Worth this year and Lebanon Trail as a team ranked in the top 15 in the metroplex in offense. Last year she was named First Team all-District. Flannery played her club soccer for the Dallas Texans.
Myers joins North Texas after earning back-to-back all-region honors for Round Rock High School where she was teammates with current UNT player Hannah Ager. Round Rock was picked by the Austin American-Statesman as the No. 1 ranked team in the 2020 Preseason Poll and Myers was named to the Preseason Starting 11. The forward led her distract as a junior with 21 goals. She played her club soccer for Sting Soccer Club.
