DENTON – The North Texas swimming and diving team has posted a 14-12 head-to-head record since 2016, including four consecutive wins over metroplex rival TCU. The Mean Green set a program record with a third-place team finish at the 2019 Conference USA Championships and have set nine program records during the span.
Â
As the Mean Green look to add to that legacy in head coach Brittany Roth's fourth season at the helm of the program, they will lean on the experience and leadership of the 2021 senior class. A group of five student-athletes who hail from a combined 17,467 miles away from Denton.
Â
"This group of seniors will always hold a special place in my heart," Roth said. "Many of them committed to our program while I was considered the interim head coach and that trust has always been so important to me."
Â
The 2021 senior class consists of Robyn Lee, Leigh Faires McGee, Ula Michalczyk, Meghan Miller and Micayla Morgan and as their journeys at North Texas near their ends, the five of them will always have their performances and experiences to remember during their time in Denton.
Â
McGee and Miller both enter their senior seasons with their names already in the North Texas record book. In 2019, McGee set the school records in both the 100 and 200 freestyle while Miller set the school record in platform diving early this year. However for the two of them, enjoying the time during their senior seasons is what ranks of most importance.
Â
"I want to end on a high note," McGee said. "I want to make the best of the changes that will be made this year due to the circumstances."
Â
"I just want to cherish every part of senior year," Miller added. "Just go out there and have fun and compete well along the way."
Â
Morgan will join McGee and Miller as three of the four team captains for the upcoming season. For the Plano native, it will be her second season as a captain for the Mean Green and that is an accomplishment she holds in high regards during her time in Denton.
Â
"The opportunity to be a captain for two years really means a lot to me," Morgan said. "It's an honor to be a leader and encourager for the rest of the girls."
Â
Lee and Michalczyk will battle their senior seasons with the longest distance between their hometowns and Denton. Michalczyk's hometown of Krakow, Poland sits 5,516 miles from the North Texas campus while Lee is 10,515 miles from her hometown in Perth, Australia.
Â
"Being so far from home and living on my own was a huge adjustment," Lee said. "But the coaches have consistently supported my goals and pushed me in my endeavors."
Â
"In the blink of an eye, these ladies will be ending their swimming and diving careers," Roth said. "Why not make it a celebration and leave the team better than they found it." Â
