DENTON — For the 14th straight year the North Texas tennis team has been named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I All-Academic Team.
Furthermore, five Mean Green tennis players earned all-academic status: Haruka Sasaki, Alexandra Heczey, Nidhi Surapaneni, Sophia Hummel and Louisa Junghanns. Returners, Sasaki, Heczey and Surapaneni, have all been previous ITA all-academic honorees.
"Earning this award for the 14th year in a row is no small feat," said assistant director of academic services Alexis Guess. "What stood out the most this year was the ability to continuously overcome obstacles. We had some struggles in the fall, but everyone found a way to finish with at least a 3.0. In the spring, the team faced the COVID pandemic like everyone else. The most remarkable part about this group is that they were able to do extremely well despite almost all of them being in different time zones. Some members of the team had to wake up at odd hours of the day to attend their lectures. I appreciate the academic dedication of the team and coach Lama's leadership through these turbulent times."
To be named an all-academic scholar athlete, they must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the entire academic year. To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must have a team G.P.A. of 3.2 or above. The Mean Green were one of 244 program awarded as an all-academic team in 2020.
Every season under head coach Sujay Lama the Mean Green have been named an ITA All-Academic Team. And in recent years, has been honored with the athletic department's highest team GPA award at the end of the year banquet.
In May, UNT was recognized by the NCAA for its academic performance, receiving an Academic Progress Rate score in the top 10% in the nation. It was the fifth straight year they've been recognized by the NCAA for its perfect APR score.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the ongoing academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years.
The Mean Green had their 2020 season cut short due to COVID-19 pandemic. But the program has reached the semifinals of 10 of the last 11 conference tournaments and returns five key women from last season's squad.
