FORT WORTH — The North Texas tennis team went from having a good showing on Saturday to having a great showing on Sunday in the second day of the TCU Invite.
UNT, which is a week away from starting its spring dual match season, went 5-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles on Sunday. Four of its five singles wins were over Texas A&M opponents.
"I love every minute of how the team competed," said senior Nidhi Surapaneni. "We were all excited and happy to compete. Most importantly we were enjoying every moment of it. Overall the team played great tennis."
Surapaneni won her singles match over her Aggie opponent in straight sets, 7-6(0-1), 6-3.
In the TCU Invite the Mean Green have now won a combined eight singles matches with five of the eight victories coming over Big 12/SEC opponents. In total, UNT has won 80 percent of all its singles matches so far at the four-day TCU Invite and a number of the women on the team have put themselves in contention to take home a singles championship at the end of the invite.
"The work I put in last semester and during the winter break is showing off," Surapaneni said. "I'm moving really well and I am hitting with power. Also, implementing the footwork drills in the match which we are working on is helping me immensely. It felt very good to get the win today."
Along with Surapaneni, Saki Oyama and Lucie Devier won their singles matches in straight sets.
Both Kexuan Zhou and Sophia Hummel battled through and were victorious in a third-set tiebreak. Hummel fought back after dropping a close first set and edged out her Texas A&M opponent in the tiebreak, 10-8.
UNT's doubles victory on Sunday came from Oyama and Hummel. The duo beat a Central Arkansas opponent, 6-4. It was a positive and encouraging sign of resilience as the pair had lost the day before in doubles in a tough match to a TCU opponent.
North Texas will be back in action on Monday at 1 p.m. CT. Live stats to all the matches can be found here.
