Mean Green Set Program Record In 63-33 Win
1/15/2021 9:20:00 PM | Men's Basketball
DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team held UTEP to 33 points on 11 made field goals, the fewest points allowed in program-history since moving to the DI ranks in 1957, and beat the Miners 63-33 Friday night at the Super Pit.
James Reese scored a game-high 16 points to lead the way for UNT who improved to 2-1 in league play and 6-5 overall.
"You can see our guys really gaining confidence in the little things," said head coach Grant McCasland. "We played hard tonight and we were as prepared as I think we've ever been."
This is the second time under fourth-year head coach McCasland UNT has held an opponent to under 40 points. The last time was 34 points on Nov. 14, 2018 versus Maryland Eastern Shore, which until Friday was the DI program-record for fewest points allowed.
"Our quality of shots and execution on the offense led to our ability to get back and guard in transition and kept them in the half court, which is what we wanted to do," McCasland said. UTEP scored zero points in transition on Friday. "That's what we're going to keep talking about. Not just the defensive stuff. How can we do it on both ends."
Reese was the only player for either team to score in double figures on Friday but it didn't matter as they blistered UTEP (6-5, 2-3), who beat nationally ranked Arizona State earlier this year. The Miners were just 11-of-52 shooting (21.1 percent) and 2-of-25 from deep (8 percent).
"We did the fundamentals right," McCasland said. "Now we just have to find a way to do it again tomorrow."
The Mean Green will host UTEP again on Saturday at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on Stadium and on the Mean Green Sports Network IMG College.
