DENTON - The Mean Green tennis team lost four home matches after to the season's abrupt end last March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but on Sunday, they return home to the Waranch Tennis Complex for the first time since Feb. 29, 2020, when they hosted Memphis.
The Mean Green will host Sam Houston State at noon on Sunday after two road matches at No. 3 Texas and at TCU to start the season. They went 6-2 at home last season.
"We are excited to play at home for the first time in nearly a year," UNT head coach Sujay Lama said. "It will be nice to have our family and friends come and see how hard these kids compete and how much improvement they have made."
UNT (0-2) is coming off a 4-2 loss at TCU on Wednesday when the Mean Green had an early lead and notched victories by doubles teams Nidhi Surapaneni and Lucie Devier and Maria Ponomareva and Kexuan Zhou, while Ponomareva, who was playing in the No. 4 spot, also won her singles match in Fort Worth.
Now the Mean Green will look to carry some of that positive momentum into claiming their first victory of the season on Sunday in front of their home fans.
"The biggest focus for us is to finish games, sets and matches," Lama said. "To not let up when we get ahead in the count. It's so important to apply scoreboard pressure in college tennis."
