FT. WORTH — The North Texas tennis team saw its Intercollegiate Tennis Association Texas Regional singles draw come to an end Saturday.
Mean Green freshmen Liisa Vehvilainen and Jasmine Adams made it all the way to the round of 16 before falling to highly seeded opponents at the regional tournament hosted by TCU.
"A tremendous opportunity to go head-to-head with very strong opponents from Baylor and Texas," said head coach Sujay Lama of Vehvilainen and Adams' matches Saturday. "This will help their growth and motivation to get that next level."
Adams fell in the round of 16 to Baylor's Melany Krywoj who is the No. 2 seeded player in the main singles draw. Krywoj won in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals over Adams.
Vehvilainen took on Texas' Malaika Rapolu — the tournament's No. 14 overall seed — and battled in the first set but eventually dropped the first set in a tiebreak and went on to lose the match 7-6(1) 6-3.
UNT still has a doubles team alive in the regional tournament. Adams and senior Lucie Devier are in the round of 16 of the doubles draw. They face the 13-seeded doubles team of Texas Tech. They begin their doubles match Sunday at 9 a.m. CT.
"Lucie and Jasmine are excited to play in their doubles round of 16 match," Lama said. "The goal is to play freely and aggressively and take it a match at a time."
