S&D opens season with intrasquad matchup

Ten new athletes will make their debuts
DENTON, Texas — North Texas Swim and Dive opens its season at 9:00 a.m. Saturday with an intrasquad meet split between the Pohl Recreation Center and the PEB Natatorium. Ten student-athletes will make their debut for the Mean Green.
The Mean Green return five divers, with two of them (Olivia Dollar and Saylor Hawkins) finishing in two A-Finals each at the final meet of the season. Swimmers Alvena Walpole and Jenny Holwell also reached top heats in Atlanta.Â
Along with ten new faces in the pool, head coach Brittany Roth added two new names to the coaching staff: diving coach Stephanie O'Callaghan and assistant coach Justin Hastings. Hastings said everyone has welcomed him and his coaching style with open arms.
"The girls have impressed me with their will to learn," the new assistant said. "It's often difficult for new coaches to come in and have their ideas and thoughts and nuances appreciated and bought into, but they've been awesome."
UNT faces off with its first opponent at 5:00 p.m. on Oct. 29 for a home matchup with UIW. The Mean Green will follow that up with another home bout against New Mexico State on Nov. 6 and close out the home schedule with the Alumni Meet on the 13th.Â
The team will then travel to Lawrence for the Kansas Classic from Nov. 18-21, followed by at Little Rock on Dec. 15, at SMU on Jan. 14, at Rice on Jan. 22 and at the SMU Time Trials on Feb. 5.Â
Postseason play begins with the Conference USA Championships from Feb. 22-27, with CSCAA Diving Zone Championships after that on March 9-13, and the season culminates with the NCAA Championships which run from March 15-20.Â
The full team returns to the pool for the first time since February where it tied the highest finish in program history at the Conference USA Championships in third place. The swim and dive squads finished 2-2 in the regular season with wins over Incarnate Word and Arkansas Little Rock.
