Men's Basketball Hosts UTA Thursday

DENTON — The back-to-back defending Conference USA champion North Texas men's basketball team hosts UT Arlington Thursday at 7 p.m. CT at the Super Pit.

Thursday's game will be streamed on YouTubeLive with Dave Barnett and Hank Dickenson on the broadcast. All Mean Green men's basketball games this season can be heard on the Mean Green Sports Network on KHYI 95.3FM and on the Varsity Network app.

UNT (1-1) has been led by newcomer Tylor Perry who has scored 40 points through the Mean Green's first two games of the season. It's the most points a North Texas newcomer has scored in their first two games in over a decade. North Texas didn't play UTA (1-2) last season but has won two straight over the Mavericks. Though UNT leads the overall series history against UT Arlington 32-26, they have not won three straight over them since 1995.

The Mavericks are coming off a 80-71 overtime loss to Abilene Christian Tuesday night in Arlington. Through three games they are led by senior David Azore who is averaging 14 points per game. UTA is under the direction of first-year head coach Greg Young who is in his 13th season with the Mavericks program but first as their leader.

NEWS AND NOTES

Thomas Bell and Jahmiah Simmons are the only active Mean Green men's basketball players who have any playing experience against UTA. Bell played 26 minutes off the bench in UNT's 2019 77-66 road win over the Mavericks. Bell had five points and five rebounds in the win. Simmons has played against UT Arlington twice. He first played them as a freshman at Arkansas State in 2017 and started in the game. He scored five point and had five rebounds in that game. He then played 13 minutes off the bench in 2018 with UNT to help lead his new team to a 63-61 home victory.
North Texas head coach Grant McCasland is 2-1 all-time versus UTA as the Mean Green's head coach. He is 2-2 when you include his one season in 2016-17 as Arkansas State's head coach.
North Texas guard Mardrez McBride through two games leads the team in minutes played (65/ 32.5 per game) but has committed just one turnover and committed only 3 fouls. In 35 minutes against Buffalo Monday he had no turnovers and one foul, which was an intentional foul late.

After Thursday's game the Mean Green head to Orlando to play in the ESPN Events Invitational. Their first game is against No. 3 Kansas on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. CT. The game will be aired on either ESPN or ESPN2 and the Mean Green Sports Network.
