DENTON —The North Texas men's basketball team lost 68-63 to Louisiana Tech Friday night at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green (9-6, 5-2) led by as many as nine in the second-half but a strong shooting performance by the Bulldogs (15-5, 8-3) especially late propelled them to victory.
"The tougher team always wins," said head coach Grant McCasland. "And I thought tonight (LA Tech) was that."
The Bulldogs out-rebounded UNT (32-28) and grabbed nine offensive rebounds, which turned into 11 second-chance points. LA Tech also had 34 points in the paint to North Texas' 30 and shot 28-of-53 (53 percent) from the field.
North Texas was led by senior Thomas Bell who scored 17 points on an efficient 7-of-11 shooting. However, 15 of his 17 came in the first half. Bell picked up two very early fouls in the second half that gave him four overall and forced him to sit for nearly 10 minutes.
On LA Tech's end, sophomore Isaiah Crawford finished with a game-high and career-high 27 points. Crawford made his last seven shot attempts. He was 8-for-9 from the field in the second half and scored 18 of his 27 in the second frame.
Six minutes into the game North Texas senior Zachary Simmons got a dunk, which gave him 1,000 career points. The big-man who wears the number 24 is the 24th Mean Green men's basketball player to reach that scoring mark. He finished with six points on the night, which actually moved him up to 23rd all-time with 1,004 career points and is only eight points behind 22nd.
"Happy for Zachary of course," McCasland said. "I know right now he's frustrated about the loss and doesn't care but it'll definitely be something he's proud of forever in the future."
UNT and LA Tech will tip it up again at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday at the Super Pit, just 11 hours from when Friday's game ended. Saturday's game will be streamed on Stadium and on the Mean Green Sports Network IMG College.
"The good thing about the quick turnaround is there's no time to dwell on it," McCasland said. "We've already moved on."
