RUSTON, La. – North Texas and Louisiana Tech women's basketball each struggled offensively in a 60-55 Mean Green loss Friday night inside Thomas Assembly Center.
LA Tech (11-6, 6-5 C-USA) knocked down all 12 of their free throws in the final quarter including four within the final minute after UNT (8-4, 5-2 C-USA) had made it a one-point game on a Quincy Noble 3-pointer with 1:16 to play.
North Texas shot just 29-percent from the floor with a dismal 4-of-28 showing from beyond the arc, while the Lady Techsters made just over 36-percent of their overall attempts and were 2-of-14 from deep. LA Tech connected on 22 of their 25 free throws as the Mean Green hit 11-of-15.
Noble led UNT in scoring with 14 points, and Tommisha Lampkin contributed eight. Madison Townley grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
"There were two things we had to do at the beginning of the game - shoot it well and rebound it," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "We got outrebounded by one and also shot it very poorly. We settled some. When you're not hitting shots, you also have to recognize when it's time to get in the paint and make a play. Those two things just didn't happen for us tonight."
The Mean Green immediately got on the board off the opening tip on a jumper by Rochelle Lee and followed with a Noble 3-pointer from the right side the next trip down the floor. LA Tech responded with seven straight to take a two-point lead. Destiny Brooks closed the quarter with a pair from beyond the arc for a 17-12 UNT lead.
The Lady Techsters closed to within a point at the 6:02 mark of the second quarter before N'Yah Boyd hit a jump shot and Noble split a pair of defenders for a bucket and a 23-18 UNT advantage. A coast-to-coast layup by Noble and a pair of free throws from Jazion Jackson put the Mean Green in front at 27-22, but LA Tech drilled a three at the halftime buzzer to close the gap.
In the third, Jackson dished a nice pass to Emma Villas-Gomis in the lane for a field goal and a 34-29 edge midway through the period. Five free throws and a layup help the Lady Techsters to a 40-36 lead before Destinee McDowell broke the UNT scoring drought with a drive from the right side. A pair from the line by Jackson finished the quarter in a 40-40 tie.
The Mean Green and Lady Techsters wrap up the two-game stint tomorrow at 4 p.m. inside Thomas Assembly Center.
