FRISCO, Texas – The remarkable success of the 2020-21 North Texas women's basketball team suddenly came to a close in the first round of the 2021 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Basketball Championships presented by Baylor, Scott & White Medical Center with a 71-66 loss to Old Dominion Wednesday at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco.
The third-seeded Mean Green (13-7, 10-4 C-USA) struggled to contain Ajah Wayne who posted 26 points and 16 rebounds for sixth-seeded ODU (12-10, 7-9 C-USA). UNT forced 23 turnovers and the North Texas bench scored 30 more points than Old Dominion, but the Monarchs outrebounded UNT 46-to-28. Emma Villas-Gomis scored a career-high 24 points, and Quincy Noble had 20 for the Mean Green.
North Texas scored its first three baskets from the left block courtesy of Noble, Jazion Jackson and Rochelle Lee for 6-2 advantage. The Monarchs went on an 11-2 run before N'Yah Boyd converted a steal into a layup with 2:32 remaining in the quarter. Villas-Gomis went on a run of her own that included a 3-pointer and two scores in the paint to give the Mean Green a 17-15 lead.
Old Dominion scored the first four points of the second quarter, but Destiny Brooks and Villas-Gomis countered. Keira Neal and Boyd each registered fastbreak layups for a 24-21 UNT edge. Villas-Gomis found Jackson with a bounce pass under the hoop to keep the Mean Green in front at 28-26 with less than two minutes to play before the half. The Monarchs made a layup and a free throw for a 29-28 lead at the break.
Noble tied the contest at 33-all with a left wing 3-pointer three minutes into the second half, but an ODU three gave the Monarchs a 45-39 lead with 2:25 on the clock. An and-one from Villas-Gomis cut the margin in half, but another Old Dominion three doubled it back to six.
A three-point play from Noble and a move by Villas-Gomis in the paint made it a two-point contest with 8:37 to play. ODU sank a shot from deep to jump ahead, 61-54, but Neal answered right back with a three of her own. A jumper from Villas-Gomis along with a pair of free throws had the Mean Green within a pair, but an Old Dominion layup and along with an and-one extended the lead to 68-61 with 23 seconds left in the game. Noble drilled a three from the top of the key, but it didn't leave UNT with enough time to counter.
Despite the tournament loss, this season's Mean Green set several program records in conference play. UNT opened up league play with five straight wins, topped the previous program-best for C-USA victories by two and achieved double-digit wins for just the sixth time in the 38 years of playing a conference schedule.
