The North Texas men's golf team is set to play its first competitive event since October and open its spring schedule at the Trinity Forest Invitational after its planned opener in Houston was canceled due to the recent winter storms.
THE EVENT: The Trinity Forest Golf Club will play at 7,330 yards, and will be a par-71 course for the tournament. The three-day event begins Sunday and concludes on Tuesday. There will be tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m., on all three days of competition with all players teeing off from Holes 1 and 10.
THE FIELD: There are 14 teams participating in the tournament (rankings are from the latest GolfStat poll): Abilene Christian, Ball State, Florida Atlantic, Lamar, Little Rock, Louisville, Missouri-Kansas City, No. 18 North Texas, Rice, TCU, Sam Houston, No. 13 SMU, UT-Arlington, UT San Antonio.
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Vicente Marzilio, Viktor Forslund, Nikhil Gopal, Lenny Bergsson and Diego Prone. Gopal will be making his collegiate debut after enrolling in January.
RESULTS: Live results will be posted on GolfStat.com. Full recaps from each day of competition will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of each round. Spectators will not be allowed to attend due to COVID-19 precautions.
LAST TIME OUT: North Texas finished sixth in its home tournament, the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational, back in October. In that tournament, Vicente Marzilio finished T-17 in his collegiate debut and earned Conference USA Golfer of the Week honors.
INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR: The Mean Green feature seven international players this year. Lenny Bergsson (Iceland), Viktor Forslund (Sweden), Nikhil Gopal (South Africa), Zak Karkaletsos (Spain), Diego Prone (Argentina), Vicente Marzilio (Argentina) and Hiroki Miya (New Zealand) round out the international players.
STRACKE SAYS: "I know the guys are itching to play their first team event since October. We have been preparing for the Trinity Forest Invitational all spring. We're excited to have the opportunity to compete this week."
UP NEXT: North Texas will have a quick turnaround when the Mean Green travel to Lafayette, Louisiana, to play in the Louisiana Classics March 15-16.
HOME SWEET MARIDOE: North Texas enjoys its home course -- the Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton. The course opened to members in July 2017 and gives the Mean Green a state-of-the-art home course with world-class facilities, including a fully-dedicated practice facility, complete with a two-ended driving range to account for many varying wind conditions, a sprawling three-acre short game retreat and indoor facilities with state-of-the-art hitting bays that provide tools the program had not previously had at its disposal.
