DALLAS — North Texas sophomore forward Allie Byrd was named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week presented by Surf and Turf Golf after leading the Mean Green to a 3-1 win over UAB by scoring a goal and assisting on a goal, both of which happened less than 10 minutes from one another.
UNT (6-2, 3-1) scored three goals in less than 10 minutes in the win over the Blazers on Friday and all came before the 20th-minute of the match. Byrd was responsible for two of the goals.
The 6-foot tall reigning all-conference and C-USA Tournament Offensive MVP striker began by flicking a header backwards over the UAB defense to a running Elle Marie DeFrain who blasted a goal past the keeper to give UNT a 2-0 lead. Then eight minutes later, Byrd used her head once again but this time to score a goal. Coming off of a corner kick from freshman Madi Starrett, Byrd leaped over nearby UAB defenders to score her third goal of the year, which is tied for the team lead.
The two goals ended up to be crucial as UAB got on the board soon after with a penalty kick but that'd be all as the Mean Green proceeded to win 3-1.
This is the second time in her career Byrd has been named C-USA Offensive Player of the Week.
UNT is on the road this week as they face UTEP in El Paso on Friday at 8 p.m. CT
