UNT Hosts UAB With Division Title On Line
3/5/2021 8:52:00 AM | Men's Basketball
DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team welcomes UAB to the Super Pit on Friday and Saturday for the final two regular season games of the 2020-21 season.
Two wins over the Blazers this weekend and the Mean Green will clinch the Conference USA West Division championship and become the first C-USA school from Texas to win back-to-back overall and/or division regular season league titles.
Getting the first victory will be important, though. UNT (13-7, 9-3) needs just one win to clinch a first round bye in the upcoming 2021 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Men's Basketball Championship presented by Baylor, Scott & White Medical Center Frisco.
Both Friday and Saturday's game will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network Learfield IMG College.
UAB (19-6, 11-5) has been a tricky opponent for the Mean Green. In eight all-time meetings, the teams are evenly split with four wins each. Under fourth-year head coach Grant McCasland, UNT has beaten UAB twice but both times came in Birmingham, Alabama. UNT beat the Blazers 71-64 last year at the Bartow Arena in the two teams' only matchup.
Friday and Saturday's matchup features two of the league's top defenses.
In league play, the Mean Green are holding opponents to 61.5 points per game, which is best in C-USA. UAB's defense is next best as they've held league opponents to 63.1 points per game.
Where UNT has separated themselves is that they also do it on the offensive end as one of the nation's most efficient and effective teams. UNT is shooting a league-best 49 percent from the field in conference games. UAB ranks 11th at 43.4 percent.
