Mean Green Lose 65-61

DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team lost 65-61 on Saturday to UAB in the final regular season game.

UNT (13-9, 9-5) never led but pulled within two points in the final seconds.

"We just weren't competitive enough," said head coach Grant McCasland. "Credit to UAB. Not exactly how I wanted us to go out on senior night but still really proud of the group."

With Saturday being the final home game of the year, the Mean Green honored its six seniors prior to the game. Two of the seniors, Javion Hamlet and Thomas Bell, scored 19 and 18 points respectively — more than anyone on the Blazers (21-6, 13-5).

UNT held UAB without a field goal in the final three minutes and 42 seconds but were able to keep the lead by scoring at the free throw line. The Mean Green pulled within two points with six seconds remaining.

Hamlet purposely missed his second attempt, which would have pulled UNT within one, but the Blazers were able to grab the rebound.

With the loss, North Texas falls to third-place in the West Division. They'll next play on Wednesday in the first round of the 2021 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Men's Basketball Championships presented by Baylor, Scott & White Medical Center Frisco. UNT will play the winner of Middle Tennessee and FIU at 9 p.m. CT on Wednesday.
