STEPHENVILLE – North Texas split a midweek doubleheader with Tarleton State to close out a 10-game stretch on the road. The Mean Green (25-10, 6-2 C-USA) won game one 7-2 before Tarleton State (15-29, 3-6 WAC) walked off in game two to win 4-3.
Â
The loss in game two ended the Mean Green's win streak at 11 games, which tied the program best that was set back in 2014. North Texas will return home this weekend for the first time Since April 3 to host Southern Miss for a four-game set on Saturday and Sunday.
Â
"We just didn't get it done," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "We were'nt very good at the plate all day. We had two good innings in the first game but then went to sleep and put it on cruise control, there's no excuse for that. We've been playing good, we just didn't have it mentally today"
Â
Game One – UNT 7, Tarleton 2
Â
North Texas got the day started by tying the program-best 11-game win streak with a 7-2 win powered by a trio of home runs from DerMargosian, Evans and Hilton and a complete-game outing from GiGi Wall.
Â
Wall picked up her tenth win of the year after allowing just two earned runs, walking one and striking out seven. It's the third consecutive start where Wall has pitched at least five innings and picked up a win.
Â
DerMargosian got the game started quickly with a leadoff home run on the game's third pitch. The leadoff home run was the first in program history since Kelli Schakde led off a game against FIU on April 3, 2016 with a home run. The graduate would end the game a perfect 3-for-3 as she also picked up a pair of singles, the 11th multi-hit game of the season for her and the third game with at least three hits on the year. The Mean Green would add another run two batters later when Evans sent her team-leading eighth home run of the season over the right field wall to put North Texas ahead 2-0 early.
Â
North Texas would blow the game open in the second inning with a five-spot. After Candain Callahan walked and DerMargosian singled to put two-on, Maia Wark would reach on a fielder's choice and a pair of Tarleton errors would plate Callahan. Evans would single to score DerMargosian to make the score 4-0 before Hilton launched her first home run of the season over the left field wall, a three-run shot put the Mean Green ahead 7-0.
Â
Tarleton would get on the board with a two-run home run in the bottom half of the fourth inning, but a pair of strikeouts from Wall would end any further threat. The teams would exchange scoreless frames the rest of the game to lock up win number 25 on the season for North Texas.
Â
Game Two – UNT 3, TSU 4
Â
Late-inning offense was not enough for North Texas as they fell to Tarleton State in walk-off fashion. Janie Worthington got the start for the Mean Green and threw 4.0 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out seven. Bailey Tindell provided two innings of relief in which she gave up one unearned run and struck out a pair, Wall was tagged with the loss after just retiring one batter in the seventh inning and surrendering two runs.
Â
North Texas fell behind early as the Texans got a two-out solo home run to take an early lead and they would hold that 1-0 lead into the fifth inning. Kourtney Williams drove a pinch-hit RBI single to right to tie the game at one before a Tarleton error plated the go-ahead run.
Â
Tarleton would tie the game at two in the sixth with a North Texas error before the Mean Green took the lead back 3-2 in the seventh with a single from DerMargosian that scored Lexi Cobb who pinch-ran for Rayna Lewis who had led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Â
The Texans would win in the bottom of the seventh after loading the bases with one-out, back-to-back singles would eventually plate the winning run and end the winning streak.
