Attendance for all North Texas softball games will be extremely limited and will include individuals on the team pass list, current UNT students and Mean Green Scholarship Fund Members who qualify for the Olympic Sports Pass.
DENTON - After 10-consecutive games on the road, North Texas returns home to host Southern Miss this weekend at Lovelace Stadium. The Mean Green and Golden Eagles are meeting for the sixth all-time series between the two programs since becoming conference opponents during the summer of 2013. The two teams were unable to play during 2020 due to the COVID-19 season cancellation.
The Mean Green have never lost a series to the Golden Eagles at home and have only lost one series overall (2016 in Hattiesburg, MS). North Texas has outscored Southern Miss 64-49 all-time in recent matchups and have a run differential of +16 in games played in Denton. The teams are set for doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday with the first pitch being at 1/3 p.m. and 12/2 p.m. respectively.Â
All four games will be streamed on CUSA.tv (subscription required) with William Broderick and Amanda Bachelder on the call for Saturday's games and AJ Tellers and Gilberto Obergon on the call for Sunday. • The Mean Green enter the weekend having won 12 of the last 15 matchups. North Texas won 11-straight games from April 2 - April 21 tying the longest win streak in program history. • Hope Trautwein tossed D1 Softball's first ever all-strikeout perfect game in game one of the doubleheader at Arkansas - Pine Bluff on April 11.
• North Texas' pitching staff leads Conference USA in ERA (1.99), opponent batting average (.208) and strikeouts (314). Hope Trautwein (1.66) and GiGi Wall (1.91) rank first and second in C-USA in ERA and Trautwein leads the conference with 146 strikeouts.
• Tuesday DerMargosian currently ranks second in Conference USA with a .430 average
and ranks fifth with 40 base hits, she also recorded the program's first ever five-hit game at Abilene Christian on March 30 while also hitting her first career home run.
• Tayla Evans has made 105 starts for the Mean Green including 98-straight. Evans has appeared in 108 games in her North Texas career with a .320 career average.
• In between games on Sunday, North Texas will honor the 2020 Senior Class who's season was cut short due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
North Texas vs. Southern Miss
• The Mean Green and Golden Eagles are meeting for the sixth overall series between the two programs since becoming Conference opponents during the summer of 2013.Â
• North Texas currently holds a 9-6 advantage in the previous 15 matchups with Southern Miss holding a one-game win streak after winning the last matchup in Denton 7-3 on March 10, 2019.
• North Texas holds a 7-2 advantage in games played in Denton.
• Southern Miss enters the weekend on an eight-game skid and has lost 12 of it's last 15 games.
• The Golden Eagles are led offensively by senior Alyssa Davis who is the only squad member with a batting average over .300 (.348) she also leads the team with a .557 slugging percentage and has driven in a team-best 36 runs while reaching base at a .370 clip. In the circle, Southern Miss has the third-lowest ERA in Conference USA at 2.65, junior Kaylan Ladner has taken on the bulk of the innings for the team throwing 79.0 and posting a team-best 2.39 ERA and .230 opponent batting average along the way and striking out a team-high 91 batters.
• Southern Miss is led by second-year head coach Brian Levin who took over the program after the 2019 season.
