DENTON – Kailey Gamble hit two offense-sparking home runs as North Texas swept Sunday's doubleheader against Southern Miss to finish off the four-game sweep for the second consecutive weekend. The Mean Green won game one 3-2 before run-ruling game two by a score of 11-3.
Â
"We got great effort and great energy from our team this weekend," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "They're really growing up and it's good to see, any time you sweep a conference opponent it's big and it's tough to win four games on the weekend. We're fortunate to do it twice in a row now but we earned it."
Â
North Texas will stay home and host UTSA next weekend for the final home series of the 2021 season with game one set for Friday, April 30.
Â
Â
Game One – UNT 3, USM 2
Â
The Mean Green (29-10, 10-2 C-USA) used late inning heroics to walk off on Southern Miss (20-25, 2-10 C-USA) for the second-straight game. Bailey Tindell picked up her first win of the season in the circle with a perfect inning of relief after Hope Trautwein threw 6.0 innings, allowing just two runs on five hits, walking three and striking out 12.
Â
The Golden Eagles led the game from the first inning on after a two-out two-run home run opened up the scoring. After the home run, Trautwein would throw five consecutive scoreless frames to keep the Mean Green within striking distance.
Â
North Texas would struggle offensively for the first six innings, only getting one baserunner to second base which came on a stolen base from Rayna Lewis in the second. Southern Miss starter Morgan Leinstock would then go on to retire nine-straight North Texas batters before a one-out single from Ashlyn Walker got the Mean Green back in the hit column.
Â
Gamble sparked the offense in the seventh by launching a leadoff home run deep into right-center, the first of her career. A single from Lewis would give way to Katy Truitt as a pinch-runner before a sacrifice bunt attempt from Miranda Holguin resulted in a Southern Miss throwing error that allowed the tying run to score and move the winning run to third with one away.
Â
A wild pitch would then allow Holguin to stumble and scamper home with the walk-off run to clinch the series victory for the Mean Green.
Â
Game Two – UNT 11, USM 3 (5)
Â
Southern Miss jumped out to another 2-0 lead in game two on a pair of errors from North Texas in the first inning. Janie Worthington would take over in the circle during the second inning and she would improve to 6-0 on the year with 4.0 innings of work, allowing just one run on two hits and striking out four.
Â
North Texas would grab their first run of the game in the third inning on an RBI double from Kalei Christensen followed by another home run from Gamble to give the Mean Green a 3-2 lead. The fourth inning would prove to be the knockout blow for the Mean Green in route to a series sweep.
Â
After a leadoff walk from Holguin and a single from Tuesday DerMargosian, a sacrifice bunt from Maia Wark would put runners at second and third with just one out. An RBI single from Tayla Evans would score Holguin before a Southern Miss error scored DerMargosian and Evans and moved Christensen to second.
Â
An RBI double from Gamble would score Christensen to make it a 7-2 Mean Green lead before a two-run double from Walker would make the score 9-2. Mikayla Smith would then single to center to put runners on the corners with two outs. An error from Southern Miss would allow Walker to score and advance Smith to third before a single from DerMargosian would score Smith and push the run-rule in effect with an 11-2 lead.
Â
A leadoff home run for Southern Miss would make it an 11-3 lead but then back-to-back pop outs and a ground ball to Smith would end the game and complete the four-game sweep.
