DENTON – Head coach Jalie Mitchell of North Texas women's basketball has signed a pair of transfers in Aly Gamez from Fresno State and Jaylen Mallard from South Alabama on Friday.
Gamez will join the Mean Green as a graduate transfer following four seasons with the Bulldogs. A Mountain West All-Freshman Team selection in 2018 and four-year starter, the 5-6 guard was fourth on the team in scoring at 9.8 points per game in 2020-21 and knocked down 51-percent of her shots, including 41-percent on 3-pointers. The MacArthur High graduate led her team to a district championship and was a two-time first team all-district selection.
"We are bringing another star guard back home," Mitchell said. "Aly's winning mentality and dedication to the game, as well as her exceptional court vision, clutch play and championship experience take us another step closer to postseason success. She has an excellent feel for the game. We are thrilled that she chose UNT to complete an outstanding collegiate career."
"I'm super excited to be coming home to be a part of this program," Gamez said. "I'm looking forward to new experiences with my teammates and winning a championship."
Mallard played two seasons for the Jaguars and earned 22 starts in 2020-21 with averages of 8.8 points and 6.5 rebounds. The Little Rock, Arkansas, native scored a career-high 18 points versus Appalachian State and pulled down a career-best 13 rebounds against Troy. The 6-2 forward scored in double figures in each of her last four contests.
"Jaylen is a great addition to our Mean Green family," Mitchell said. "Her work ethic is her signature, and she has the game to show for it. Jaylen's versatility will allow her to play inside and out for us. She fits our style of play and will assist us in getting back to the rebounding we all know and love. We are excited to strengthen our front court and continue competing for championships!"
"I'm so excited to join this program," Mallard said. "North Texas was my dream school all through my recruiting process in high school. I'm happy that I get the chance to play for Coach Mitchell and play with a team that loves to work hard and win!"
