DENTON - When the North Texas men's golf pulled off a miraculous match-play semifinal win in the Conference USA Championship to earn a spot in the final match a couple of weeks ago, it seemed as if the Mean Green might've been a team of destiny.
While they ended up falling in the final, the Mean Green won't be unrepresented at the NCAA Regionals this coming week, as freshman Vicente Marzilio earned an automatic bid after claiming the Conference USA Championship individually with a dramatic back-nine that saw him birdie four of his last seven holes to win by one shot.
Marzilio will follow up his conference championship by teeing off at the Stillwater Regional beginning Monday and going through Wednesday at Karsten Creek Golf Club.
"I really wanted to go with the whole team," said Marzilio, whose 72.28 stroke average was the best on the team over the course of his freshman season. "It really is the goal for everyone. However, being able to win conference and play regionals in my first year feels awesome. Rather than an objective, it was a dream to do that as a freshman. I'm happy I'm playing good golf in this first stage."
The freshman from Don Torcuato, Argentina, carded five top-20 finishes in the team's six tournaments with the win at the C-USA Championship and had nine rounds of par or better, with eight of those being under par including all three at the conference championship when he shot a 70-68-67-205.
"I think the key (to my success) was to believe in my game and learn how to compete in college," Marzilio said. "I feel I've been paying a lot of attention to my performance to keep improving, and I plan to keep doing that."
UNT head coach Brad Stracke said he is excited to get another player to the regional round, as Marzilio will be the first since Ian Snyman made it as an individual in 2018 and finished tied for 21st at the Norman Regional. Karsten Creek will play as a par-72 course at 7,502 yards.
"I am excited to take Vicente to Karsten Creek for regionals," Stracke said. "Karsten Creek presents a great test of golf and allows the best players to separate themselves from the rest of the field.
"I'm looking forward to watching Vicente compete and continue to grow as a player."
