DENTON – Hope Trautwein and Janie Worthington combined to allow one earned run in route to a 3-1 Sunday victory over UTSA to complete their third Conference USA sweep in a row. North Texas (33-10, 14-2 C-USA) have now won a program-best 14 conference games in a row.
Â
The Mean Green will conclude the regular season with a shot at another Conference USA crown on the road at Louisiana Tech next weekend.
Â
"I like the ability of our team to just grind," head coach Rodney DeLong said. "I felt like early in the year the grind was a little much for us and know I feel like we're comfortable in situations even when things aren't going our way. We stayed up and got the job late in the game right there, executed late in the game and hats off to our kids for handling the pressure situations and our pitchers were great this weekend."
Â
Trautwein picked up her 11th win of the season with 6.0 innings of work in which she allowed just one run on three hits, issued a pair of walks and struck out 14 batters. In the sixth inning, Trautwein recorded her 200th strikeout on the season which made her just the second player in program history to ever go over the double-century mark in a single year. The senior recorded 200 strikeouts before any other Conference USA pitcher recorded 100 strikeouts on the 2021 season.
Â
The Mean Green took the lead in the first inning after a leadoff walk to Tuesday DerMargosian and a sacrifice bunt from Maia Wark gave way to a single from Kailey Gamble that drove in the game's first run and gave the freshman RBI number 11 on the year and fifth on the weekend. Gamble hit a team-high .500 on the weekend with four doubles mixed into her team-high tying six hits (DerMargosian).
Â
Trautwein would strike out eight UTSA (11-29, 5-11 C-USA) hitters before a one-out double in the fourth inning gave them their first hit. After a pair of singles and a walk in the fifth loaded up the bases, a hit batter would give the Roadrunners their first run off Trautwein on the weekend, tying the game at 1-1 before a pop-out and strikeout ended any further threat.
Â
A pair of singles from Wark and Kalei Christensen in the bottom half of the sixth would give way to an RBI sacrifice fly by Gamble that scored Katy Truitt to give the Mean Green a 2-1 lead before a UTSA error brought home Christensen to make it 3-1.
Â
Worthington picked up her first career save with one inning of work in which she gave up a pair of hits and recorded a strikeout. A double-play turned by Miranda Holguin and Gamble would seal the final home series of the year and record conference win number 14 in a row for the Mean Green.
