DALLAS - UNT freshman Vicente Marzilio followed up his individual Conference USA championship last week by leading a North Texas contingent of three to land on the All-Conference USA team, which was released on Tuesday.
Marzilio was named the conference's Freshman of the Year days after piloting a massive comeback that saw him birdie four of the final seven holes in the final round of last week's Conference USA Championship to win the individual title by one shot. He was also named to the All-Conference First Team and was selected to the All-Freshman team alongside teammate Nikhil Gopal. Junior Lenny Bergsson was named a third-team selection after being named to the All-Freshman team two years ago.
"What well deserved honors for Vicente, Lenny and Nikhil," UNT head coach Brad Stracke said. "All three of these players are perfect examples of what student-athletes are all about. I'm proud of these guys and the entire team."
Marzilio burst onto the scene as a freshman out of Don Torcuato, Argentina, playing in all six of the team's tournaments and carding top-20 finishes in five of them, including his win in the C-USA Championship with a 70-68-67. His season scoring average of 72.28 through the conference tournament leads the team, and he will compete in the NCAA Regional May 17-19, as an individual with the hope of advancing to the NCAA Championship.
Bergsson had the second-best scoring average on the season at 73.22, and had three top-20 finishes with two of those being top-10 showings (eighth at the Louisiana Classics and T9th at the C-USA Championship). Gopal, who enrolled at UNT in January, played in all five tournaments this spring and had three showings in the top-30 with a season-best T20th at his collegiate debut at Trinity Forest. His 73.53 scoring average was good for third on the team.
