SAN DIEGO - A pair of Mean Green golf alumni are set to tee it up at the 121st U.S. Open this week, with play beginning Thursday and concluding Sunday at Torrey Pines Golf Course, as Sebastian Munoz and Carlos Ortiz will each make their third appearance in the tournament.
Ortiz, 30, made his U.S. Open debut in 2016 at Oakmont Country Club and missed the cut before returning in 2019 at Pebble Beach and finishing T-52 after shooting 70s in the first two rounds before going 75-73 in the final two rounds. He posted his first PGA victory at the 2020 Houston Open held this year after last year's cancelation. He also finished T-4 at the Phoenix Open and T-8 at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Ortiz qualified for the tournament by entering the top-60 of the Official World Golf Ranking as of May 24. He's currently ranked 53rd in the world and is ranked 30th in the FedEx Cup Standings.
Munoz, 28, made his U.S. Open debut in 2018 at Shinnecock Hills and missed the cut before returning last year at Winged Foot and finishing T-59th. Munoz notched his first PGA victory at the 2019 Sanderson Farms Championship. He qualified for the tournament by qualifying for last year's season-ending Tour Championship. Munoz finished T-3 at the Charles Schwab Challenge, T-9 at the Texas Open and ninth at The CJ Cup.
"UNT has two PGA Tour winners representing us at the U.S. Open, and I'm hoping one of them is holding the trophy on Sunday," UNT head coach Brad Stracke said. "Good luck, Carlos Ortiz and Sebastian Munoz. You make us proud!"
Television coverage will be on Golf Channel, Peacock's streaming service and NBC on Thursday and Friday before moving to Golf Channel and NBC for the weekend. Ortiz will tee off from the first hole on Thursday at 3:58 p.m., and will be paired with Zach Johnson and Lanto Griffin, while Munoz will go off from the 10th tee at 4:09 p.m., with Brendon Todd and Rikuya Hoshino.
