DENTON — The 16-time conference champion North Texas soccer team has finalized its 2021 schedule that includes home games against Baylor, Texas A&M, Rice and a trip to Oklahoma and Hawaii.
The Mean Green, who have won a league record eight Conference USA women's soccer trophies in just eight seasons, open the 2021 season with a home exhibition match against Texas A&M on Aug11 at 7 p.m. The regular season begins on Aug 20 with a home match versus Southern.Â
The 16-match regular season slate features seven home matches. The biggest of the non-conference matches will be on Sept 2 when UNT welcomes Baylor to the North Texas Soccer & Track and Field Stadium. North Texas has three wins over the Bears in its 26-year history. The two schools most recent meeting came in 2012, which resulted in a scoreless draw. The Mean Green were Sun Belt regular season and tournament champions in 2012.Â
The Baylor match will be on the heels of a road trip to Hawaii where UNT will take on the Warriors on Aug 27 as well as play a neutral site match against Idaho State on Aug 29.Â
A couple days after hosting Baylor the Mean Green will travel North on I-35 to take on Oklahoma in Norman on Sept 5. UNT beat the Sooners 1-0 in Denton last season.Â
Two matches against Southland opponents follows the trip to Oklahoma. The Mean Green host SFA on Sept 10 and then quickly turnaround and face ACU in Abilene, Texas, on Sept 12.Â
The eight-match league schedule begins on Sept 16.
The Mean Green begin C-USA play with a tough test at Florida Atlantic. UNT and FAU last met in the 2019 C-USA Tournament championship game, which North Texas won 5-2 to claim its most recent league title and advance to its seventh NCAA Tournament.Â
Consecutive home matches versus UTEP (Sept 19) and then Southern Miss (Sept 24) follow the league opener.Â
A trip to UTSAÂ (Oct 1) follows the two home matches and then a week off to prepare for FIU at home on Oct 8 follows that. North Texas beat the Panthers 7-0 the last time they played in 2019. Then freshman now junior Allie Byrd scored four goals in that victory.Â
The Mean Green are headed to UAB on Oct 15. The Blazers did shutout the Mean Green 1-0 the last time they met in Birmingham, Alabama, which came in 2019. However, when they met last season in Denton UNT won 3-1.Â
A trip to Louisiana Tech on Oct. 22 is North Texas' final regular season road match. The Mean Green haven't traveled to Ruston, Louisiana, since 2017. That match ended in a 1-1 draw.Â
The regular season concludes with a banger. The Mean Green host Rice on Oct. 28. Though the Owls are the defending league champs and advanced all the way to the Sweet 16 of the 2020-21 NCAA Tournament, North Texas beat them 2-1 in Houston last season. Furthermore, North Texas has an eight-match unbeaten streak against its in-state rival.Â
The 2021 Conference USA Women's Soccer Championship will be held in Boca Raton, Florida, at FAU from Nov. 3-7.
