Late Goal Draws UNT With No. 9 Aggies

DENTON — A goal in the 86th minute by senior captain Olivia Klein gave the North Texas soccer team a 1-1 draw with No. 9 Texas A&M Wednesday night in an exhibition match at home.
The Mean Green (RV) outshot the nationally ranked Aggies 17-8 and put nine on target. But it was the final shot that got UNT on the board.
"We had a lot of good looks all night," Klein said after the draw. "We kept working and working for chances and our defense did a great job of preventing many opportunities for them. Proud of how the team played against a really good opponent."
In front of 1,195 fans at the North Texas Soccer and Track & Field Complex, Klein chased down a through ball with four minutes remaining, pulled the Aggies keeper off her line and scored the match-tying goal as the stadium erupted.
Prior to the Klein goal, UNT had two 1-v-1 breakaways with the keeper that were called off because of narrow offsides. They hit the crossbar on one attempt in the second half and had two open looks denied by a diving TAMU keeper.
With over 53 percent of the possession by UNT, frustration might have crept in after Texas A&M took a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute when Makhiya McDondald juked her away around for a goal. But the Mean Green kept pushing forward and finally got the exhibition equalizing goal by Klein.
Along with Klein, the Mean Green received notable performances by newcomer Manami Okada who was all over the field. The junior college all-American from Navarro College controlled the pace from the midfield and took two really good shots that were both saved by the Aggies' goalkeeper. She was the only UNT player to put two or more shots on target. Fellow senior captain Brooke Lampee was also in mid-season form. The centerback controlled the Mean Green backline and played physical with Texas A&M's attacking front. She also nearly scored in the second half from a deep set piece.
The Mean Green will be back on Sunday for their second and final exhibition match. UNT hosts Brookhaven at 11 a.m. in Denton. The regular season begins on Aug. 20 versus Southern at home.
