DENTON — Sixteen-time conference champion North Texas head soccer coach John Hedlund has announced the hiring of full-time assistant coaches Alexsis Cable and Dylan Burnett to his staff on Monday.
This is a return home for Cable who is a UNT alum that graduated and played for the Mean Green from 2015-16. She most recently served as the interim head coach at Nicholls State. Burnett joins North Texas with ties to Conference USA as he served as an assistant coach at Southern Miss from 2017-18. In 2018 he helped guide the Golden Eagles to the C-USA Tournament finals where they'd fall to UNT in double overtime, 2-1.
"I'm excited to be part of the winning tradition, now in a different role," said Cable. "It's every college athletes dream to return to their alma mater. I have so much respect for John Hedlund and this university that this opportunity is a dream come true. I've come home to learn and be mentored by the best and hopefully win a few more rings."
Cable, a centerback for Hedlund and the Mean Green, was a member of the 2015 UNT team that posted a program-best 19 wins and shutout a program-best 16 of its 24 opponents, including all three in the league tournament, as they captured the 2015 C-USA regular season and tournament titles. After graduating from North Texas in May of 2017, Cable began her coaching career at Northwestern State as a graduate assistant. At NSU, Cable helped guide the Lady Demons to their second Southland Conference Tournament berth in three seasons and a 10-win campaign.
After two seasons at NSU, Cable was hired full-time at Nicholls State as an assistant coach for the 2019 season. In her second season at Nicholls, just two months prior to the start of the crazy 2020-21 season she was named interim head coach for the Colonels.
Cable earned a Bachelor of Science in Integrative Studies from North Texas and a Master of Science in Health & Human Performance from Northwestern State in May 2019. She grew up just down the road from the UNT campus and is a 2013 graduate from Marcus High School.
For Burnett this too is somewhat of a return to North Texas as he was hired as a volunteer assistant for UNT in 2020 but due to the postponement of the season those plans were put on hold.
Burnett took the opportunity to teach health and coach the girls soccer team at Denton's Braswell High School for the 2020-2021 school year. At Braswell, Burnett coached five 5-6A All District selections and the team improved their win total by three from the previous season.
But coaching in Conference USA will be nothing new to Burnett. The 2014 Lincoln Memorial University alum was an assistant coach at Southern Miss from 2017-18, which were two of the Golden Eagles' most successful seasons in program history. Burnett was responsible for helping recruit some of the most talented Dallas/ Fort Worth student-athletes to Hattiesburg. USM's 2018 C-USA Tournament finals appearance was the first time in program history they had reached the finals of a conference tournament.
The Golden Eagles saw three all-conference selections, three all-conference tournament selections and two all-south region selections for their 2018 effort.
Similar to Cable, Burnett also has head college coaching experience. He served the 2019 season as the head men's soccer coach at Mississippi University for Women where he led the program to its first appearance at the USCAA National Tournament and improved its previous win total by two. He was responsible for coaching three All-Academic Americans, two National Player of the Week accolades and two National Goalkeeper of the Week accolades.
Burnett earned his Bachelor's of Science Degree in Kinesiology with minors in health and strength and conditioning. Burnett also holds his Texas & Tennessee Practitioner Teaching license, a NSCAA National Diploma, USSF E License, NSCAA Level 1 Diploma, NSCAA Goalkeeping 2 diploma, a NSCAA Futsal Level 1 diploma, an Advanced National Diploma & is working on his Premier Diploma. He has his Master's of Science in Sports Coaching Education from Southern Miss.
"I'm very excited to be part of this championship program," Burnett said. "I'd like to thank John Hedlund for giving me the opportunity and I'm thrilled to work with such great student-athletes and staff. Our season can't get here soon enough. Go Mean Green."
The Mean Green start the 2021 season on Wednesday with an exhibition match versus Texas A&M at home. First kick for Wednesday's home match is scheduled for 7 p.m. UNT enters the 2021 season having won eight league trophies since the 2014 season, which is more than any active or past C-USA women's soccer program in the league's 26-year history. North Texas has never had a losing season and have not lost to a league opponent at home since October 31, 2008.
They return all-conference honorees Brooke Lampe, Allie Byrd, Madi Starrett and welcome one of the top incoming classes in the region that include Vanderbilt transfer goalkeeper Sarah Fuller and NJCAA All-American Manami Okada.
