Maridoe Collegiate Invitational
Maridoe Golf Club | Carrollton, Texas
The North Texas men's golf team is set to open the season at its home course by competing in the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational after ending last season on a high note by advancing to the match-play final of the Conference USA championship and seeing freshman conference champion Vicente Marzilio advance to an NCAA Regional as an individual.
THE EVENT: Maridoe Golf Club will play at 7,600 yards, and will be a par-72 course for the tournament. The three-day event begins Monday and concludes Wednesday, with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. on all three days.
THE FIELD: There are 15 teams participating in the tournament (rankings are from the latest GolfStat poll), including No. 5 Arizona State, No. 34 Baylor, Florida Gulf Coast, Howard, No. 24 Liberty, North Texas, No. 49 Ohio State, No. 2 Oklahoma, No. 18 SMU, Southern California, No. 37 TCU, No. 11 Texas, No. 13 Texas A&M, No. 12 Texas Tech and No. 9 Wake Forest.
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Lenny Bergsson, Diego Prone, Sean Wilcox, Vicente Marzilio and Tucker Allen, a transfer from Oklahoma who will make his North Texas debut.
RESULTS: Live results will be posted on GolfStat.com. Full recaps from each day of competition will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of each round.
TUBE TIME: The tournament will be nationally televised live on all three days, with coverage on the Golf Channel from 3-6 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: North Texas made it to the match-play final of the Conference USA championship after a dramatic victory in the semifinal.
INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR: The Mean Green feature six international players this year. Lenny Bergsson (Iceland), Viktor Forslund (Sweden), Nikhil Gopal (South Africa), Zak Karkaletsos (Spain), Diego Prone (Argentina) and Vicente Marzilio (Argentina) round out the international players.
STRACKE SAYS: "After a competitive qualifier I believe we are prepared to compete in the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational. We have four returners playing this week along with Tucker Allen. It's going to be imperative that the team sticks to the game plan and plays golf within themselves."
UP NEXT: North Texas will travel to Albuquerque to compete in The Tucker on September 24-25.
HOME SWEET MARIDOE: North Texas enjoys its home course -- the Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton. The course opened to members in July 2017 and gives the Mean Green a state-of-the-art home course with world-class facilities, including a fully-dedicated practice facility, complete with a two-ended driving range to account for many varying wind conditions, a sprawling three-acre short game retreat and indoor facilities with state-of-the-art hitting bays that provide tools the program had not previously had at its disposal.
