Tennis Ends Islander Open With Four Titles

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The North Texas tennis team concluded the three-day Contender CrossFit Islander Opener Sunday by adding two more flight championships bringing its tournament total to four.
The Mean Green's senior Lucie Devier and freshman Likhitha Kalava took home singles flight titles on Sunday. It comes a day after UNT won two doubles flight championships.
For Kalava, the Islander Open was her first collegiate tennis competition and her first road trip with her new team. It was a fantastic showing for the Hyderabad, India native who also played well with her doubles partner Maria Ponomareva.
"This weekend was very good for me," said Kalava. "I learned a lot about tennis and the team. We are all very close, we support each other and we have a great time together. My first college tournament was an amazing experience and I'm looking forward to competing in many more."
In total the Mean Green went 13-2 in singles and 9-3 in doubles over the three days to go along with their four flight championships. Weather was a factor Sunday as the matches were postponed due to rain and then a few of UNT's singles matches were eventually canceled.
Devier and freshman Jasmine Adams won a doubles flight championship on Sunday to go along with Liisa Vehvilainen and Saki Oyama's doubles flight title that was also won on Sunday.
North Texas next plays in another three-day fall tournament as they travel to the Milwaukee Tennis Classic this coming Saturday.
