MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin — The North Texas tennis doubles team of Jasmine Adams and Lucie Devier advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw of the 2021 Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Saturday with a 6-2 win.
Adams and Devier will face the nation's No.1 ranked doubles on Sunday in the quarterfinal round. UNT has never beaten a national ranked No. 1 opponent.
"Lucie and Jasmine continue to gel and build chemistry," said head coach Sujay Lama. "They were clean and efficient from the get go. Tomorrow they have an amazing opportunity again the No. 1 team in the nation."
Adams and Devier also competed in singles on Saturday at the MTC. Adams, just a freshman, won her first round match, 6-3, 6-2, over Luara Masic of Indiana. However, in the round of 16 Adams would fall to the No. 4 seeded Carmen Corley of Oklahoma in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Devier fell in the round of 32 of the singles draw to Nebraska's Kristina Novak, 6-3, 6-4.
"Jasmine turned a lot of heads with her performance today against a highly ranked opponent," Lama said. "She went toe-to-toe and did not blink at all. The difference was the experience. She will learn from this loss and become a better player."
On Sunday Devier and Adams will face Oklahoma's sister team of Ivana and Carmen Corley in the quarterfinals of the MTC doubles draw. The sister are ranked No. 1 in the nation. UNT is aiming to reach the semifinals of the MTC doubles draw for a second consecutive trip.
"I am very proud of the way we competed and carried ourselves," Lama said. "Our routines and rituals were impeccable."
