DALLAS — North Texas soccer freshman Jori Foote on Tuesday was named the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week presented by Surf & Turf Golf.
Foote, who over the past few weeks has emerged as one of the top young defenders in the league, again showed her prowess in Friday's shutout against Souther Miss.
The Pflugerville, Texas, native made at least six open field tackles at the centerback position and contained the league's reigning Offensive Player of the Year to just one shot in the 110-miniute match. Foote led UNT to its seventh shutout of the season and contained the Golden Eagles to three shots on goal over the entire match.
Foote has taken over the reins of the Mean Green backline recently and has shown off her athleticism, strength and aggressiveness that has led her team to a 0.66 goals-against average. Since being inserted primarily in the starting 11 five games ago, UNT has had four shutouts.
This is Foote's first player of the week honor. She is the first UNT freshman to earn a C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honor in program history and just the second Mean Green freshman to be named to any player of the week honors — Rachel Holden in 2013 was named C-USA Offensive Player of the Week.
