DENTON -- The North Texas men's basketball team has finalized its 2021-22 season opener. The back-to-back defending Conference USA champions will host Oklahoma Christian on Nov. 9 at the Super Pit.
The game will be a double-header with the UNT women's basketball team in the afternoon.Â
This will be just the third all-time meeting between the two schools. The Mean Green have never lost to OC. They opened the 2019-20 season against one another and UNT won 79-40. That season the Mean Green went on to capture their first regular season league title in 31 years and finished with a program-best 14-4 conference record.Â
The Mean Green are coming off of a season where they captured their first Conference USA Tournament championship and earned the program's fourth-ever NCAA Tournament bid. At the 2021 NCAA March Madness Tournament, UNT — seeded a program-best No. 13 — upset Purdue in the first round 78-69 (OT) to capture the program's first NCAA Tournament victory. The Mean Green enter the 2021-22 season as back-to-back C-USA champs after capturing the 2020 C-USA regular season crown.
They ended last season ranked No.55 in the NET. It's the highest the program has ever ended a year ranked in the NET/RPI.Â
OC went 6-12 overall last season playing only Lone Star Conference games. The Eagles will be replacing their top two leading scorers who averaged over 15 points per game a season ago.Â
