Mean Green will compete against Texas A&M, Sam Houston State, SMU, SFA, UTA and UTSA
DENTON, Texas – North Texas track and field kicks off the 2022 indoor season Saturday on the road in Bryan-College Station for the Ted Nelson Invitational at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University.
Â
"I'm excited for this year's indoor season," Director of Track & Field Carl Sheffield said. "We had a really good fall. I compare it to previous falls, and that's why we're excited about this one. With the number of people that we have returning, the quality of our training sessions were really good. I'm a big practice person, and I think that the better we train, the better we will race and compete."
Â
UNT will compete against host Texas A&M as well as Sam Houston State, SMU, SFA, UTA, UTSA and other regional teams.
Â
"Some of the larger Division I Texas schools will be there, including some of our Conference USA schools," Sheffield said. "It's people that we compete against on a regular basis, so it's a really good way to challenge ourselves to see how good we are starting out."
Â
The Mean Green men's team returns outdoor All-American pole vaulter Michael Gonzalez and Conference USA Champions Antonio Delacruz (60 meters, 200 meters) and Zion Hill (javelin) as they look to build upon a historic 2021 campaign that saw them set program bests with second place (indoor) and fourth place (outdoor) finishes at the C-USA Championships.
Â
On the women's side, Conference USA runners-up Jaleisa Shaffer (shot put) and Lyric Choice (60-meter hurdles) return as well as the majority of UNT's productive 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay squads looking to take the Mean Green to the next level.
Â
"I think we're ready," Sheffield said. "I'm excited to see the women's team. We have a lot of young women who are talented. For them to start their first indoor meet at Texas A&M in that competition will show a lot of who they are and what they are capable of doing.
Â
"We have a really good group of freshmen women's sprinters. We want to see what they're about. The men's throwers are upperclassmen and they are doing really well. We return most of the men's sprinters. The distance runners had a challenging fall, so I'm really excited to see how they start their indoor season."
Â
The debut of the 2022 USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Rankings will be on Monday, Jan. 22, following the Mean Green's second meet of the season (in Norman, Okla.)
Â
Live results from Bryan-College Station can be found here, while the meet will be streamed live on SEC Network+ (Day 1, Day 2).
