The Mean Green (12-4, 5-1 C-USA) are coming off of a 65-51 victory over Charlotte Thursday night in Denton to move into a tie for second place of the deep Conference USA West Division standings at 5-1. The 14-point victory was North Texas' fourth straight win and was the 10th time this season they've held an opponent to a season-low scoring. UNT features the nation's second-best scoring defense as they hold its opponents to an average of just 56.4 points per game. During this current 11-game stretch they've held opponents to just 54.9 points per game.
UNT also features the nation's best three-point defense as opponents only average 4.25 made 3-pointers per game against the Mean Green.
On Thursday North Texas sank 11 3-pointers in the win. UNT is outscoring its opponents this season by 201 points from beyond the arc. Mardrez McBride and Tylor Perry each made five 3-pointers in Thursday's win as the two combined to score 32 points to lead their team.
North Texas heads into Saturday's game on a two-game winning streak over the Monarchs (7-10, 2-2 C-USA). They beat ODU last season in the Conference USA Tournament quarterfinals, 61-55. UNT went on to win two more games in the tournament and claim the 2021 C-USA Tournament championship. McBride, Thomas Bell, JJ Murray and Abou Ousmane are the only active North Texas men's basketball players who have experience against ODU.
